ISK Martial Arts offers both traditional Tang Soo Do Korean Karate and modern Kickboxing classes in Redruth, Cornwall. Both are excellent for improving fitness, confidence, coordination and self-defence skills, but they have different training styles.

Tang Soo Do (Korean Karate)

A traditional Korean martial art combining powerful kicks, hand techniques, hyungs (forms), self-defence, sparring and traditional martial arts values. Training develops discipline, focus, flexibility and technical ability, with progression through a structured belt grading system.

Kickboxing

A dynamic martial art focusing on punches, kicks, combinations, pad work, fitness and controlled sparring. Classes develop striking skills, stamina, coordination and confidence, with opportunities for gradings and competition.

Which should I choose?

That depends on what you enjoy and what you want from your training. If traditional martial arts, forms and technical development appeal to you, Tang Soo Do could be ideal. If you prefer pad work, striking combinations and an energetic training environment, Kickboxing may be a better fit.

Both programmes welcome beginners aged 13+, and you don't need any previous experience or fitness level to get started.

At ISK Martial Arts in Redruth, Cornwall, children's safety and wellbeing are extremely important to us.

Our classes are carefully structured to suit different ages, abilities and experience levels, with experienced instructors providing guidance and supervision throughout training.

Tiny Tigers (ages 3–6) focuses on developing confidence, balance, coordination, listening skills and discipline through fun, age-appropriate martial arts activities.

Warriors Junior Kickboxing (ages 7–15) introduces punching and kicking techniques, fitness, self-defence skills and controlled sparring as students develop their abilities.

We take a responsible approach to contact training, with clear rules and appropriate supervision. Head contact is not permitted for students under 18 at ISK.

While all physical activities carry some risk, our aim is to provide a positive, supportive training environment where children can develop their skills and confidence safely.

Parents are always welcome to discuss any concerns or individual requirements with our coaching team before their child's first class.

Our friendly Karate and Kickboxing classes in Redruth welcome people with a wide range of goals, whether that's improving fitness, building confidence, learning martial arts skills, progressing through belt grades or competing.

Do I have to compete?

No. Competition is an opportunity for students who wish to pursue it, not a requirement for joining ISK. We support both recreational martial artists and those who want to develop their competitive skills.

What about sparring?

Sparring is an important part of developing martial arts skills in some of our programmes. It is introduced progressively, with coaching, supervision and clear safety rules appropriate to the student's age and experience.

At ISK, head contact is not permitted for students under 18.

If you're nervous about sparring or have concerns about contact training, please speak to our coaching team. We'll explain what your chosen programme involves and help you understand what to expect.

Martial arts isn't just about fighting. It's about personal development, confidence, respect, fitness and achieving your own goals.

At ISK Martial Arts in Redruth, Cornwall, we believe that earning a new belt should represent genuine improvement, commitment and achievement.

Our Karate and Kickboxing programmes offer structured progression systems appropriate to each student's age, ability and experience.

Tiny Tigers (Ages 3–6)

Our youngest students develop fundamental skills through fun activities, with achievements celebrated through activity books, merit badges and age-appropriate belt progression.

Warriors Junior Kickboxing (Ages 7–15)

Students follow a structured belt syllabus covering kickboxing techniques, combinations, fitness and personal development. Progress is monitored through regular assessments, with monthly assessment weeks and formal belt progression based on achieving the required standards.

Adult Kickboxing (Ages 13+)

Students work through a progressive technical syllabus, developing striking skills, combinations, defensive techniques and practical ability. Gradings provide opportunities to demonstrate improvement and progress towards black belt.

Tang Soo Do Korean Karate (Ages 13+)

Students progress through traditional coloured belt grades towards black belt and beyond. Gradings assess technical knowledge, fundamental techniques, hyungs (forms), self-defence and other syllabus requirements. ISK is affiliated with the World-Wide Tang Soo Do Association.

Is grading compulsory?

We encourage students to work towards achievable goals, but our emphasis is always on personal development rather than simply collecting belts.

Everyone progresses at their own pace, and our experienced instructors provide guidance throughout their martial arts journey.

At ISK, we believe the person you become through training matters more than the colour of your belt.

Choosing a martial arts club is about finding somewhere you feel comfortable, supported and motivated to improve.
